This week the Centre of Expertise on Child Sexual Abuse has published The Experiences and Support Needs of Parents and Carers of Sexually Abused Children: A Knowledge Review which explores existing research and resources in this area, and is designed to help professionals, funders, commissioners, and decision makers better understand the impact of abuse and the support needs of parents and carers of children who have been sexually abused.

"Overall, the review shows that non-abusing parents and carers are profoundly affected by child sexual abuse as well as being central to children’s recovery. Their ability to believe, protect, advocate for and emotionally support their child is shaped not only by the abuse itself but also by the quality of the professional and systemic response around them. Supporting parents is therefore not an optional addition to child-focused work; it is a necessary part of an effective response to child sexual abuse."
